Nar Phu valley trek is a remote, unique and culturally rich Himalayan adventurous journey in Nepal’s Annapurna region. The valley is known for its Tibetan Buddhist culture, unique landscapes, ancient villages (Nar and Phu), challenging high Kang La Pass which makes an ideal destination for experienced trekkers.

The trek starts from Koto village, following the rugged trail that leads to the lost valley of Nar and Phu, crossing the Kang La and reach to Ngawal village. It is a restricted area requiring special permits, also demanding good physical fitness for the high-altitude adventure journey. The valley is known for its well-preserved Tibetan culture, customs, lifestyle, ancient buddhist monasteries filled with prayers wheels, flag and mani walls.

The villages are picturesque huddle of traditional, stone and mud houses built into the side of a cliff, designed for resilience against the harsh weather and historical threats. The best season are spring and autumn offering colourful flowers, stable weather, blue skies and amazing mountain views.

Day 01

Drive Kathmandu to rural village via Gorkha Bazzar 1,522M

Highlights of the day: Drive through Nepali highway along the Trishuli river, from Abukhaireni ascend hilly roads leading up to Gorkha. You’ll see the hillside settlements before arriving at historic Gorkha Bazzar, home for the famous Gorkha Durbar (Palace) and gateway to Manaslu region treks. Tour of Gorkha bazar, Palace on the way and stay over in a village with a host family.

Exploring around rural village 950M

Day 03

Drive rural village to Besisahar 760M

Highlights of the day: Breakfast in homestay and will drive to Besisahar by private Jeep. It is the small vibrant town which is the former trek starting point for the Annapurna circuit trek. In the evening will do sightseeing around the market.

Day 04

Drive Besisahar to Koto 2,600M

Highlights of the day: Drive along the adventurous road trip to Koto. During the journey you will have the views of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. Drive through Timang village, known for Tibetan culture and prayer flags. Arrive at Koto village, it is the staring point for Nar Phu valley trek.

Day 05

Trek Koto to Meta village 3,560M

Highlights of the day: From here will leave the main Annapurna circuit trail and follow the right trail to Nar Phu valley. It is the restricted area and need to have the special permits to enter this valley – will check your permits in the check post and trek to Meta village. The trail follow along the river, forests, cross the suspension bridges, ascend uphill trail until Mata village.

Trek Meta village to Phu Gaun 4,080M

Highlights of the day: The trail is mostly ascended and pass through Kyang village to Phu Gaun. It is a remote, an ancient Tibetan village known for its fortified stone architecture, historic Tashi Lhakhang monastery and well-preserved culture.

Trek Phu Gaun to Nar Phedi 3,490M

Highlights of the day: Retrace the trail until you meet the junction, from there will follow the trail on right side which lead to you Nar Phedi. There is no village in Nar Phedi, it is the base of Nar Gaun where is just one monastery. This monastery is offering a unique, simple cultural stays, sharing meals with nuns/monks.

Trek Nar Phedi to Nar Gaun 4,110M

Highlights of the day: After having the breakfast in monastery, the trail mostly uphill before reaching to Nar Gaun. Nar is also a remote and culturally rich Tibetan Buddhist village. They preserved their traditions, stone houses, ancient monastery and unique lifestyle.

Day 09

Trek Nar Gaun to Ngawal/Nawal 3,660M via Kang La Pass 5,399M

Highlights of the day: This is the long and challenging day of your entire trek. To cross the Kang La Pass, we need to start early morning, late morning might be windy. The top of the pass offers the breathtaking view of Mt. Annapurna range including the close-up view of Mt. Annapurna II and IV. After the pass, the trail is very steep, sleepy so recommend to have your micro-spike (crampons), and trekking poles. Ngawal/Nawal is the historic high-altitude settlement, in the shadow of Mt. Annapurna range.
